We are opposing the excessive expansion of commercial activities on the shores of Lake Opinicon. The lake is part of the UNESCO Rideau Canal system and Frontenac Arch Biosphere Reserve and contains significant protected areas. We are greatly troubled about ongoing damage to the lake’s sensitive habitat and its biodiversity, the harmful impact additional commercial activities would have on wildlife, fish and habitat, certain species at risk, and protected areas, and other cumulative impacts that will be felt on the shoreline. We are also concerned about impacts on heritage sites.

Protect Opinicon Lake
Story
We will begin by opposing the expansion of large-scale commercial activities on Lake Opinicon’s sensitive shores and working to ensure that this biodiverse area is not jeopardized by short-sighted development decisions. In particular, we are challenging a proposal that would rezone an existing campground to allow it to host 227 camping sites, more than four times what is permitted under current zoning rules.
To oppose such developments, we must hire experts in environmental law, environmental sciences, and planning. We are also raising awareness about the lake’s fragile ecosystem so that we can begin reversing ongoing damage to wildlife and fish habitat and the lake’s biodiversity in general.
All of these efforts require considerable funding, in addition to volunteer resources.
